Razlog Valley is a unique natural corner of Bulgaria, huddled between the three most beautiful Bulgarian mountains – Pirin, Rila and Rhodope Mountains. These are mountains in the southwest of the country with a completely different character.

Old trees, sunny slopes, endless views of the Pirin and Rhodope mountains, picturesque meadows and centuries of trails fascinate hearts and dreams. Rila Monastery is located at 1,147 m. Altitude in the fragrant coniferous forests of Rila Mountain.
The monastery is a complex of religious, residential and agricultural buildings with a total area of 8800 square meters Rila Monastery has an unique architecture. Outside, 24-meter high stone walls of the main buildings that form an irregular pentagon, the monastery looks like a fortress. In the middle of the cobbled courtyard in a strange symbiosis coexist raw battlements of the fortress tower and baroque silver domes of the main church. In the middle of the courtyard stands the oldest building in the complex – an impressive stone tower, built by the local feudal Sevastokrator Hrelyu in 1334-1335, the Next to it stands a small church, which is only a few years younger (1343 ).
In more recent times (1844) to the tower belfry was added. Around that time, the monastery’s main church “Virgin Mary”. One of the most valuable things inside is the iconostasis with its incredible carving. The murals were completed in 1846 and are the work of many masters, but only the famous Zahari Zograf has signed his paintings. In the church there are lots of icons created between the 14th and 19th century.
LESHTEN and Kovachevitsa
Nestled at the foot of the mountain with exciting views of Gotse Delchev valley and the ridge of Pirin, Leshten offers a unique combination of beautiful nature, great architecture, modern amenities with the romance of a bygone time. White houses with large verandas, spacious yards and stone roofs, scattered around the glen, a maze of stone streets, rustic inn in the center – all this brings unique charm of Leshten.
The main street is covered with pavement called cobblestones. The most remarkable architectural monuments dating from 1833 are the monastery and the village school house “Sveta Paraskeva”. The main livelihood of the population in the past were masonry, blacksmithing and gold mining. Leshten is today a tourist resort.
The village is situated on 1500 m. Altitude. Nearby run Kanina, known for its deep pools, the abundance of trout and magnificent waterfalls. Charming cobbled streets and the timeless beauty of the big houses with their white facades and cuddled each other eaves – a great example of Bulgarian architecture through the ages.
The village has about 110 Renaissance houses, some of which have been converted into small hotels offering specialties from the Rhodope cuisine. Today, the village has preserved its unique and exceptional character, and in 1977 was declared an architectural reserve.
